Auckland’s hazards
The recent spate of natural disasters around the world has left me wondering if Auckland could be moved by an earthquake, or rocked by volcano’s or even swamped by a tsunami. What I have discovered is quite an eye opener.
“The most likely source of a tsunami would be an earthquake from the West Coast of South America. There is a 50% chance that in the next 50 years Auckland will be hit by a tsunami. Wave heights of up to 4 metres could appear in the Hauraki Gulf, this is the most likely damaging tsunami for Auckland”. WOW!
Earthquake
“Auckland earthquake shaking capable of causing liquefaction damage has a return period of more than 500 years, or a
10% chance of occurring in the next 50 years” ARC Auckland hazards fact sheet no.11
Although; since that was written we’ve had the big one in Christchurch and this is what Associate Professor Phil Shane of the Auckland university’s geology department has to say:
“The risk of a major tremor is unlikely above the Waikato. But the discovery of a blind or long-buried faultline near Darfield emphasised the existence of latent dangers deep in New Zealand’s earth”. NZ Herald
And to back up what he said, here’s a little more fyi : NZ Herald 2007
Volcano
local eruption: 4.9% chance in 50 years
Distant eruption: 63% chance in 50 years
and on it goes, If anyone is interested in the official Auckland hazards information then movers Auckland has linked it for you to download here: Auckland hazards
Movers Auckland also recommends responsible preparation for disaster, it’s hitting home that no one is immune to these kinds of events not even Auckland. If the big one happens and supplies cannot move around or into Auckland then having some supplies for you, your family or even your staff to get through is the right thing to do.
Movers Auckland has linked the c.d.s lists, available here:
If the nature of the disaster dictates that you must move out of Auckland or your suburb in a hurry then knowing where the traffic is moving around Auckland and which roads in and out are passable will be invaluable. If you still have internet access before you move then The AA provides a service on their website. As far as I know the information is pulled in from many sources including AA members, *222 ltsa and webcams. You don’t need to be an AA member to get access, it is provided by the AA for free.
The AA free traffic update is located at: www.aaroadwatch.co.nz
The AA service is also available direct to your navman, tom tom or Garmin-Asus a10 in car navigation devices. The AA transmit the signal via Vodafone and the AA’s own radio network inside the greater Auckland area.
While on the subject of the AA Movers Auckland recommends AA membership, The AA provide cheap insurance that also covers moving, to all AA members nationwide!
