Due to the high bounce rate I feel the need to inform people that this is a factually based blog entry and the information contained within this post is drawn from official sources, the information referenced here and linked for you to download is about as good as it get’s in regards to earthquake hazard in Auckland.

Movers Auckland would like to send our heart felt condolences to all the families and people affected by the tragic loss of life that is unfolding in Christchurch following the disasterous earthquake. Our thoughts as well as our prayers are with the people of Christchurch.

Auckland’s hazards

The recent spate of natural disasters around the world has left me wondering if Auckland could be moved by an earthquake, or rocked by volcano’s or even swamped by a tsunami. What I have discovered is quite an eye opener.

Tsunami

“The most likely source of a tsunami would be an earthquake from the West Coast of South America. There is a 50% chance that in the next 50 years Auckland will be hit by a tsunami. Wave heights of up to 4 metres could appear in the Hauraki Gulf, this is the most likely damaging tsunami for Auckland”.  WOW!

Earthquake

“Auckland earthquake shaking capable of causing liquefaction damage has a return period of more than 500 years, or a
10% chance of occurring in the next 50 years” ARC Auckland hazards fact sheet no.11

Although; since that was written we’ve had the big one in Christchurch and this is what Associate Professor Phil Shane of the Auckland university’s geology department has to say:

“The risk of a major tremor is unlikely above the Waikato. But the discovery of a blind or long-buried faultline near Darfield emphasised the existence of latent dangers deep in New Zealand’s earth”.  NZ Herald

And to back up what he said, here’s a little more fyi : NZ Herald 2007

Volcano

local eruption: 4.9% chance in 50 years

Distant eruption: 63% chance in 50 years

and on it goes, If anyone is interested in the official Auckland hazards information then movers Auckland has linked it  for you to download here:  Auckland hazards

Movers Auckland also recommends responsible preparation for disaster, it’s hitting home that no one is immune to these kinds of events not even Auckland. If the big one happens and supplies cannot move around or into Auckland then having some supplies for you, your family or even your staff to get through is the right thing to do.

Movers Auckland has linked the c.d.s lists, available here:

Business

Domestic

If the nature of the disaster dictates that you must move out of Auckland or your suburb in a hurry then knowing where the traffic is moving around Auckland and which roads in and out are passable will be invaluable. If you still have internet access before you move then The AA provides a service on their website. As far as I know the information is pulled in from many sources including AA members, *222 ltsa and webcams. You don’t need to be an AA member to get access, it is provided by the AA for free.

The AA free traffic update is located at: www.aaroadwatch.co.nz

The AA service is also available  direct to your navman, tom tom or Garmin-Asus a10 in car navigation devices. The AA transmit the signal via Vodafone and the AA’s own radio network inside the greater Auckland area.

While on the subject of the AA Movers Auckland recommends AA membership, The AA provide cheap insurance that also covers moving, to all AA members nationwide!

Moving out of Auckland?

Posted in Furniture moving on February 23rd, 2011 by admin

So you’re picking up sticks and making the big move out of the big smoke? Maybe your moving to an even bigger smoke?

Well the furniture removal company tip of the day is just for you.

Distance plays a major factor in the type of move you are going to have to make, if your just moving around the country then standard moving procedures will apply. The only difference between moving 10km’s and 1000km’s is distance and time, obviously the further you move the longer it will take.

If you are moving further than 800km’s and time frame is a consideration then you need to check with your furniture moving company if they can put on two drivers as moving trucks travel slower than most vehicles. Movers are limited to the amount of hours they can drive before having to take a rest (10 hours). Auckland to Wellington (with a tail wind) is around the limit without taking a ten hour break.

Remember that when moving long haul the earlier the movers start the better the arrival time at the destination. It may very well be a prudent idea to have your furniture packed into the trucks the day before so the movers can go home, have a rest and get moving super early the following morning. Most moving companies, as with fast track have secure overnight lock up facilities to ensure the safety of your furniture.

International moves from Auckland

Moving overseas brings a whole new set of issues that involve packers, shipping companies, special insurance and movers at the arrival country, This is one of the most important considerations.

Choosing the right movers at the receiving end will make or break your moving experience. If you decide to go with a moving company that handles the entire move from a to b then make sure you enqiure as to who will be picking up your furniture at the destination port. Check them out! Make sure you have the relevant contact details, it may even pay to call them and touch base before your furniture sets sail from Auckland.

If your planning your entire international move yourself  there are plenty of  moving blogs, like this one: NYC movers where you can find usefull info you might need.

The Art of Packing

Posted in Furniture moving on February 19th, 2011 by admin

Why packing your things properly is so important. furniture moving box

If your planing on packing your own items before your next move then the following movers tip for the day might just save you time and money! As we have literally moved thousands of people around Auckland, we have a wealth of experience when it comes to knowing the difference between what is going to be a fast and efficient move and when it’s going to be a downright nightmare!

Here’s what we’ve learned so far:

A: Make sure you have enough moving box’s ( nothing worse than running short)

B: Don’t fill the box’s with lots of heavy items, spread the weight this way the movers will be able to move and stack the box’s quickly and evenly

C: Remove clothes and items from drawers, cabinets and shelving units, pack seperately

D: make sure all fragile and delicate items are either set aside for you to carry or clearly seperated and marked.

E: All electrical equipment, computers, dvd players, tv’s etc should be fully disasembled and out of their cabinets etc..

Try to get cracking and start packing at least ten days before moving day, get rid of as much surplus as you can (moving day is a great excuse for a clean out). Bubble wrap or newspaper breakables, this is extremely important when you are doing your own packing.

Movers rarely take responsibility for self packed items nor are they liable for how someone else packs box’s. So check with your home and content provider to see if your are covered while you possession’s are in transit.

If you follow these simple moving tips, when moving day comes around the movers will be able to move through your job and have your furniture from A to B in no time. This WILL save you money on time and will drastically decrease the likely hood of damage to your furniture and personal belongings.

Happy moving!

Cheap Movers in Auckland. Five point check list

Posted in Furniture moving on February 18th, 2011 by admin

cheap movers auckland According to Google there are around 800 people every month who look for ”cheap furniture movers in Auckland”!

There’s a good chance you are one of them which is why you are reading this article

Have I got your attention yet? Don’t worry I’m not going to tell you off or go into a lengthy sermon over the evils of using cheap services, but rather offer some constructive advice when it comes to selecting a cheap moving company so please read on..

Cheap moving company checklist:

1) Are they a GST registered Ltd. moving company?

2) How much to they charge in comparison to their competitors?

This is a very important factor when selecting your moving company, if they are 40% cheaper or more than the most expensive company you have checked with, then BE AWARE! Insurance and recourse may be severely limited when dealing with a price slashing company!  which leads me to the next two points on the list.

3) Does the cheap company have movers or carriers insurance?

4) Do the moving company’s trucks have current C.O.F ‘s (certificate of fitness)?

This could prove a major pitfall should a road accident occur which leads to your property being damaged….

5) does the moving company provide blankets and tie downs to secure your belongs safely in the truck

There are other issues I wont go too far into these because the customer has little no control, except to exercise common sense.Chances are that any cheap moving company which fails in all of the above five points is not going to represent themselves honestly over the phone.

Moving in Auckland being what it is you may be faced with a situation where the cheap moving company has misrepresented themselves over the phone and you end up with a bunch of guys who have dangerous heavy vehicles on our roads running around uninsured throwing peoples possession’s around like rugby ball’s. Not to mention the high possibility of dishonest behavior from a cheap moving company.

This could range from inaccurate charging to outright theft of your personal belongings.

Decent reliable moving companies will always insure their vehicle’s and content. They will have acceptable furniture moving standards and practices to protect your belongings and their employees will be well trained and enthusiastic. This is the only sure fire way to make your next move a smooth and safe affair for all involved.

If your still bent on saving the dollar then have a look at these bozo’s. Cheap is most likely going to turn nasty:
